Suddenly, his ox began to talk, telling him that if he killed it and put on its hide, he would be able to reunite with Zhinü. Following the ox’s instructions, he flew to his wife. To separate the couple forever, the Goddess took out her hairpin and scratched a wide river in the sky, thus forming the Milky Way between Altair and Vega.

From then on, Zhinü weaves colorful clouds on her loom on one side of the river, while Niulang watches her from afar and takes care of their two children (his flanking stars β and γ Aquilae) on the other side.
